Canada Unveils Bill C-39 to Streamline Infrastructure Project Reviews
The Canadian government has introduced Bill C-39, also known as the Building Canada Strong Act, aimed at expediting infrastructure project reviews and providing developers with clearer timelines. The legislation mandates that federal project reviews be completed within one year of a full application submission.
The bill's centrepiece is to enhance Canada's trade corridors and ports, establishing strategic corridors and creating a new Transportation Project Office. It also proposes updates to the Canada Labour Code, including a 70% increase in health and safety inspection capacity.
Since the launch of the Major Projects Office in September 2025, 27 initiatives worth $200 billion have been referred for review. The legislation is significant as it aims to streamline the construction process, potentially unlocking over $1 trillion in public and private investment, thereby strengthening Canada's economy.
