Canada Unveils First Banknote with King Charles III
The Bank of Canada has unveiled its first banknote featuring King Charles III, marking a significant change to the country's currency. This new $20 bill will enter circulation in late February 2027 and is part of Canada's Vertical series.
The note features the King's portrait surrounded by floral and leafy motifs inspired by his environmental causes. The front also includes the emblems of Canada's 13 provinces and territories, as well as a transparent circular window depicting plants significant to Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem described the new banknote as 'striking, symbolic, and secure.' He noted that its imagery reflects Canada's natural beauty and history. The reverse side of the note retains the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France as a tribute to the country's military contributions.
