Canada Unveils Mega Deduction to Boost Business Investment
Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a 'productivity mega deduction' to encourage businesses to invest in Canada. The measure, which expands on earlier efforts from the Liberals, allows companies to immediately write off the cost of certain investments. This will drop Canada's effective marginal tax rate on new business investment from roughly 13 per cent to 6.4 per cent, making it more competitive with the US.
The deduction covers a wider range of assets than before, including mining property, oil and gas pipelines, software, research and development, computer equipment, and patents. However, some assets are excluded from the new rules, which has been criticized as creating a two-tier system in favor of larger projects. The government says the measure is permanent, allowing businesses to plan in a stable tax environment.
Experts argue that this move will improve cash flow for businesses and strengthen the economy. However, some critics suggest that the government should simplify the tax code and level the playing field for all businesses instead of creating carve-outs and complexity.
