Canada Unveils One Canadian Economy Strategy to Streamline Internal Trade
The Canadian government has introduced a new strategy aimed at simplifying internal trade and labor mobility across provinces and territories. The One Canadian Economy Act, which received Royal Assent in June 2025, aims to remove federal barriers that duplicate provincial or territorial requirements.
The framework is designed to make it easier for businesses to sell products nationally, move workers between jurisdictions, and expand operations. It also supports the faster development of projects considered to be in the national interest, such as energy corridors, ports, railways, critical minerals, and clean-energy projects.
Improved labor mobility could expand the pool of workers available to employers across Canada, particularly in industries experiencing regional shortages in skilled labor such as construction, engineering, transportation, healthcare, and energy. The reforms are part of Ottawa's broader effort to improve productivity, competitiveness, and economic resilience.
