Canada Unveils Retaliatory Measures Against Trump's Tariffs

Canada's finance minister and senior officials announced retaliatory measures against President Donald Trump's latest tariffs on Canadian products. The announcement came after the US imposed new 50% tariffs on various Canadian goods, which went into effect early Saturday.

The Canadian government had initially vowed to retaliate 'dollar for dollar' but may take a more nuanced approach due to the significant size of the American economy. Finance Minister Mark Carney said they could not accept the US terms at the last minute, describing them as 'unfair' and 'uneconomic.'

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer rebutted Carney's account, stating that he had proposed reducing tariffs on steel, aluminum, autos, and softwood lumber. However, Carney maintained that any Canadian retaliation would likely be more targeted due to the disparity in economic size.
