Japan Faces Record Debt Servicing Costs in FY2027 Budget
Japan's finance ministry has released its budget for fiscal year 2027, projecting a surge in debt servicing costs. The projected cost of servicing Japan's debt is set to increase by 17% to a record 36.64 trillion yen ($230 billion) due to an assumed interest rate of 3.8%, the highest in 29 years. This significant jump in debt costs is expected to put further strain on Japan's already strained public finances.
The combined value of budget requests from all government ministries and agencies for fiscal 2027 is set to exceed 130 trillion yen, a notable increase from the current fiscal year's 122 trillion yen. The government intends to shift certain expenditures previously covered by supplementary budgets into the initial budget, which could further swell overall spending figures.
The finance ministry review and drafting of a budget are anticipated to receive cabinet approval by the end of the year. This development has significant implications for Japan's economic future and its ability to manage its massive debt burden.
