Canada-US Homebuyer Interest Plunges Amid Trade Tensions
Canadian homebuyers are increasingly hesitant to invest in US real estate, according to recent data from Redfin. The company's analysis shows that online searches for US homes by Canadians have declined by a cumulative 37% over two years, with a particularly sharp drop of 15.3% year-over-year in June.
The decline is attributed to the ongoing economic uncertainty and trade tensions between Canada and the US, which are causing many Canadians to rethink their plans for cross-border property ownership. Chen Zhao, head of economics research at Redfin, notes that 'buying a home in another country is a particularly big financial commitment'.
Not all regions have been affected equally, with Texas and New York experiencing some of the largest declines in Canadian searches. However, there are still some areas where Canadians are showing interest, including Kansas City, which saw a 17.6% increase in searches.
A Royal Bank of Canada survey found that 37% of Canadians cited insufficient knowledge of the cross-border buying process as their primary obstacle to investing in US property.
