Canada-US Trade Tensions Escalate with Dollar-for-Dollar Retaliation
A trade dispute between the US and Canada is escalating, putting pressure on the Canadian dollar. BNY's Geoff Yu reports that Washington is considering further trade penalties against Canada after Ottawa announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation to new American tariffs.
The dispute follows a collapse in recent trade talks and marks a sharp deterioration in bilateral relations. Canada plans to double counter-tariffs on US steel and aluminum to 50% and impose new 50% duties on products including dairy, furniture, clothing, and electronics, affecting around $20bn of annual US exports.
Washington is weighing higher tariffs and other measures in response, having already threatened 50% auto tariffs on Canada from January. This escalation could create domestic political pressure in US manufacturing states that are heavily exposed to Canadian retaliation.
