Canada-Vietnam Ties Set to Enter New Phase as President To Lam Visits
Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Jim Nickel says that the upcoming visit of Party General Secretary and President To Lam will elevate bilateral ties between Canada and Vietnam, creating a new chapter in their partnership. This visit marks the first time a CPV General Secretary has visited Canada in over 50 years.
The two countries have had diplomatic relations since 1973 and established a Comprehensive Partnership in 2017. In recent years, trade between them has grown significantly, with two-way trade increasing by 30% last year to reach 20.6 billion Canadian dollars. The majority of Vietnamese exports to Canada are in the agriculture and agrifood sector.
Canada aims to double its trade and investment relationship with Vietnam over the next five years by developing cooperation in clean energy, high-tech innovation, supply chains, and strategic investment. Ambassador Nickel also highlighted the potential for Canadian investors to participate in Vietnam's international financial centers and infrastructure development projects.
