Canada's $100 Million Pledge to Palestinians Ignites Domestic Concerns
Prime Minister Mark Carney recently pledged an additional $100 million to Palestinian assistance during the United Nations General Assembly meeting. This donation is in addition to the $600 million Canada has given to Palestinians since 2023, mainly through the UNRWA.
The funds will be used for various purposes, including peace and security capacity building, with $20 million dedicated to an RCMP training program for Palestinian police. However, this move has been met with criticism, as some argue that the Palestinian police are becoming increasingly militarized and may pose a threat to Israel in the future.
Carney's announcement was part of Canada's efforts to facilitate a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians. He co-hosted a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and Saudi representative Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to discuss ways to achieve this goal.
However, the move has sparked controversy in Canada, with some questioning why more funds are being allocated to Palestinians rather than addressing domestic issues. With 4.5 million Canadians living under the poverty line and a fragile economy, many are asking 'what about us?'
