Canada's $40 Billion Pipeline Gamble
The Canadian government has designated a proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast as a project of national interest, citing its economic value. However, this decision raises questions about the wisdom of subsidizing fossil fuels with public money.
According to recent data, global energy investment is on track to reach $3.4-trillion in 2026, but a significant portion of this amount will go towards clean energy projects, including power grids, energy storage, and low-emission fuels.
In contrast, fossil fuel investment has been declining, with private investors now contributing less than 30% of the funding for these projects. Meanwhile, taxpayers are providing around $1.2-trillion in subsidies to oil, natural gas, and coal industries.
Despite the government's stated ambition to make Canada a clean energy superpower, its actions seem to be at odds with this goal. The three fossil fuel projects currently receiving support from Ottawa account for about $100-billion, while most of the clean economy's biggest project value remains years away from being implemented.
