Canada's Big Six Banks Team Up for Programmable Digital Deposits
Canada's six largest banks are exploring the development of a Canadian-dollar tokenized deposit system. The initiative, which involves Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Bank of Nova Scotia, and TD Bank Group, aims to create a programmable digital infrastructure that allows money held at different financial institutions to move efficiently while remaining within the regulated banking system.
The project's first phase will focus on moving tokenized deposits between financial institutions rather than creating a new cryptocurrency for consumers. The participating banks said the initiative is intended to deliver 'faster, more efficient and programmable payments to Canadian customers while preserving safety, stability, and effective regulatory oversight.'
Tokenized deposits are essentially existing commercial bank deposits represented digitally on blockchain or distributed-ledger infrastructure. This distinction allows banks to use programmable settlement technology without moving deposits outside the established banking framework.
