Canada's Credit Crisis: Bankruptcy Filings Soar Amid Unsustainable Household Debt

Canada's economy may be thriving in many areas, but beneath the surface lies a growing concern, a credit crisis affecting Canadian consumers. According to David Rosenberg, bankruptcy filings in Canada have topped 2009 levels for two consecutive quarters, with 37,523 Canadians filing for insolvency in the second quarter alone. This marks a nearly seven percent increase from last year and is the highest quarterly total since 2009.

The issue is not limited to credit card debt; homeowners are also struggling, with a five percent increase in insolvencies in the second quarter. This represents nearly one in ten distressed debtors, indicating that many Canadians have entered into negative net equity positions due to high loan-to-value mortgages.

Rosenberg highlights the alarming statistic of residential mortgage arrears, which has risen to a decade-high level and surpassed the 2008 pre-recession mark. The median loan-to-income ratio for first-time homebuyers stands at an astonishing 372 percent, with over one in five burdened by an LTI ratio of 450 percent or higher.

The root cause of this issue lies in Canada's household debt levels, which have stabilized at 166 percent but remain significantly above the historical norm. This debt bubble has led to a stubbornly high aggregate household debt-service ratio of nearly 15 percent, mirroring the level that triggered previous recessions.
