Canada's Economic Growth Slows in September Amid Rising Inflation
Canada's economic expansion slowed in September as inflationary pressures mounted, according to the latest Ivey Purchasing Managers Index (PMI). The headline measure fell to 58.2 from 64.3 in August, indicating a deceleration in growth, though it remained above the 50 mark that signals expansion. The adjusted prices index rose to 82.8 from 80.4, highlighting stronger inflation during the month.
The employment gauge improved slightly to 56.5 from 55.0, suggesting that hiring conditions strengthened despite the overall moderation in economic activity. The unadjusted PMI also eased to 61.9 from 62.7, reinforcing the view that while the economy continues to grow, the momentum is cooling compared to the previous month.
In other news, Canada's federal government announced a $1 billion Food-Link Fund as part of the National Food Security Strategy. The fund aims to expand food distribution capacity and improve access to affordable, locally produced food. Applications for the program will run from October 14 to December 11, 2026.
