Canada's Economy Surges in Q2 but Faces New Tariff Headwinds
Canada's economy experienced a surge in growth during the second quarter of this year, with exports jumping 3.6% led by a rebound in passenger car and light truck shipments.
This followed a period of almost no growth in the prior four quarters combined, according to StatCan. Household, business, and government spending all increased in the quarter, but one drag on growth was businesses drawing down their inventories rather than adding to stockpiles.
However, the economy is now facing new headwinds with the implementation of 50% U.S. tariffs on various Canadian goods that took effect on August 22. Canada's planned retaliatory measures are set to start on September 8.
Ariane Curtis from Capital Economics warned that strong momentum from the second quarter won't carry over into the third, citing preliminary estimates suggesting GDP was unchanged in July due to a reversal of the FIFA World Cup boost.
