Canada's Energy Shifts Towards Oil, Contradicting Transition Narrative

Canada's energy landscape is often misunderstood as being in the midst of a transition from fossil fuels to cleaner sources, but data shows that the country has actually seen an increase in oil production and a decline in natural gas and coal over the past two decades.

A recent analysis reveals that between 2000 and 2024, oil's share of energy production in Canada increased by 18.2 points while lower-carbon-emitting natural gas declined as a share of production by 8.9 points and coal fell by 4.7 points.

This trend contradicts the narrative put forward by Prime Minister Mark Carney's election platform, which pledged to 'lead the energy transition while ensuring affordable energy at home and building the strongest economy in the G7.'
