Canada's Home Sales Plummet Amid Economic Uncertainty
Home sales across Canada declined by 6.9% in August, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA). The slowdown is attributed to several economic headwinds that are draining momentum from the housing sector.
The total number of home sales nationwide was 37,504 in August, a nearly 7% drop from the same period last year. On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales decreased by 0.7% compared to July this year.
CREA points out that rising inflation risks and the possibility of interest rate increases have weakened Canada's economy, negatively impacting sales activity. Additionally, economic uncertainty resulting from U.S. tariffs imposed on Canadian goods has also contributed to a slowdown in housing sales.
The national average sale price of a home in August was $668,219, which represents a 0.6% increase from the same period last year. New listings in August rose by 3.3% month-over-month, putting an end to a streak of three consecutive monthly declines seen earlier in the summer.
