Canada's Indigenous Businesses Scramble Amidst US Trade War
Canadian Indigenous businesses are facing tough times due to the ongoing trade war with the US. The Canadian Council for Indigenous Business (CCIB) has launched its 'Buy Indigenous' campaign to help these businesses navigate the challenges and find new markets.
According to Tabatha Bull, the president and CEO of CCIB, about 90% of Indigenous businesses are small micro-enterprises that struggle with uncertainty in the economy. The tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have caused significant disruptions for these businesses, making it hard for them to operate smoothly.
Bull emphasized that the 'Buy Indigenous' campaign is essential for promoting Canadian products and supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs. She highlighted the importance of removing barriers to accessing government programs, such as the requirement of having a minimum of $1 million revenue, which many Indigenous businesses cannot meet.
