Canada's Job Losses Raise Doubts Over Bank of Canada's Rate Hike Plans

The Bank of Canada faces a challenging balancing act as it navigates between rising inflation and slowing economic growth. This dilemma comes after Canada's job market experienced a significant setback, losing 68,000 jobs in September. The unemployment rate also ticked up to 6.5% from 6.4% in August, according to a report from the Financial Post.

Economists had anticipated a modest gain of 10,000 jobs for the month, making the actual decline a surprising and concerning development. This marks the second consecutive month of job losses, following a drop of 42,000 positions in August. Douglas Porter, chief economist at Bank of Montreal, described the job report as a 'sour result,' assigning it a grade of 22.5 out of 100.

Porter noted that while employment has risen 0.5% from a year ago, the decline in job seekers has helped keep the unemployment rate from rising even higher. He attributed over half of the job losses to the education sector, which has seen a 4.2% year-over-year decrease, possibly due to a reduction in international students. Manufacturing also took a hit, losing nearly 13,000 positions, which some economists link to escalating trade tensions.

Royce Mendes, managing director and head of macro strategy at Desjardins Group, suggested that the drop in total hours worked could be another sign of the trade standoff's impact. He noted that Canada's aging population, with workers leaving the labor force, is currently helping to stabilize the unemployment rate. With key inflation numbers and the Bank of Canada's outlook survey due on October 19, this disappointing job report significantly reduces the likelihood of further interest rate hikes.
