Canada's Job Market Surges with 75,100 New Positions
Canada's economy added an impressive 75,100 jobs in July, exceeding expectations and pushing the unemployment rate to a two-year low of 6.4%. The strong job growth was seen across both full-time and part-time sectors, with gains of 38,600 and 36,600 positions respectively.
The increase in employment was concentrated in the private sector, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, finance and insurance, and professional services. The Canadian dollar also strengthened by 0.4% to a near eight-week high of C$1.3959 against the US dollar.
Despite the positive news, some analysts remain cautious, citing ongoing uncertainty related to US tariffs and international tensions. Arlane Curtis, senior North American economist at Capital Economics, noted that 'there was really nothing in the report to dislike', while Royce Mendes of Desjardins emphasized the need for further recovery before considering policy tightening.
The Bank of Canada has kept interest rates steady at 2.25% since last October and is not expected to hike them until next year, according to money markets.
