Canada's Population Grows Despite Sluggish Economy
Statistics Canada has revised its population estimates, showing that Canada's population grew by approximately 300,000 people in the first half of 2026.
This growth is primarily attributed to non-permanent residents, who make up 6.7 percent of the Canadian population.
The revision alters the economic landscape, indicating slower per capita GDP growth than previously thought.
Former StatCan chief economic analyst Philip Cross said that a large correction of population estimates like this is 'very unusual' and caused by the influx of non-permanent residents.
