Canada's Transportation Sector Sees Rise in Work Stoppages, Ottawa Steps In
A new report from the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI) has stated that the Canadian government's recent legislation, Bill C-39 or the Building Canada Strong Act, is a vital response to a growing trend of crippling strikes in the transportation sector.
The report cites recent examples of work stoppages at major ports and airlines, including the 2024 lockouts at the ports of Montreal and Vancouver, which threatened the transport of over $1 billion worth of goods per day.
Gabriel Giguère, a senior policy analyst at MEI, said that these types of transportation companies are unique and warrant special legislation to keep them in operation. 'It's at the centre of the economy,' he emphasized.
Teamsters Canada spokesperson Christopher Monette countered that the Canadian economy can withstand limited disruptions and argued that Ottawa's intervention was unnecessary.
