Canada's Unlikely Leader: Carney's Economic Resilience and US Relations
Mark Carney's leadership has resonated with Canadians who see him as a wartime leader, handling his American adversary and boosting Canada's economic resilience. His calm authority has charisma, and he has reassured moderate voters and impressed some Conservatives.
The Liberal coalition has faultlines, however. Tactical left-wing voters helped Carney into office to keep Trump at bay and prevent a Conservative victory. But many are uncomfortable with the direction of travel, particularly regarding the west coast oil pipeline.
Among voters generally, while Carney and the Liberals enjoy healthy leads on handling tariff negotiations and US relations, things are much more competitive when it comes to bread-and-butter questions like the economy, housing, and cost of living. The Conservatives should be the main beneficiaries of any shifts in public opinion, but they have work to do if they are to capitalize.
The party is associated with business, fiscal responsibility, law and order, lower taxes, and immigration control. However, their negative perception as being too closely identified with US-style politics could be damaging.
