Canadian and U.S. Stock Markets Inch Higher
Canada's main stock index, the S&P/TSX composite, posted modest gains on Monday, driven by a strong performance in the technology sector. The index rose by 15.90 points, closing at 35,518.55. Meanwhile, U.S. markets also showed positive movement, with major indices recording gains.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average climbed 90.94 points to 51,267.90. The S&P 500 index advanced 51.23 points to 7,773.95, while the Nasdaq composite saw the largest increase, adding 286.45 points to reach 27,477.31.
The Canadian dollar experienced a slight dip, trading at 70.16 cents US, down from 70.20 cents US on Friday. Commodities also saw fluctuations, with the November crude oil contract falling US$1.68 to US$89.43 per barrel, and the December gold contract dropping US$5.50 to US$4,156.80 an ounce.
