Canadian Bank Stocks Face Valuation Risks Amid Strong Earnings
Canadian bank stocks have been a reliable investment choice for decades, thanks to their consistent profit generation and growth. The latest earnings reports from the country's six largest banks have further solidified this reputation, with all of them beating analysts' expectations.
The Royal Bank of Canada reported record quarterly net income of $6 billion in its most recent quarter, up 11% year over year, thanks to contributions from wealth management and capital markets alongside traditional banking operations. Toronto-Dominion Bank also reported strong results, with adjusted earnings of $4.7 billion, up 21% from a year earlier.
However, investors should not assume that the banks' profits will continue to grow at the same pace every quarter. The diversification of their businesses is a major reason why Canadian bank stocks are reliable investments, but it's also essential to keep an eye on loan balances and potential risks such as higher mortgage payments and trade uncertainty.
With valuations at a premium, investors may need to reassess the value of bank stocks. The BMO Equal Weight Banks Index ETF (TSX: ZEB) provides exposure to all six major banks with equal weights, paying monthly distributions and offering a current yield of 2.4%.
