Canadian Banks Launch Joint Effort for Digital CAD Money
Canada's six largest banks have joined forces to develop digital money for the Canadian dollar. The initiative, led by Royal Bank of Canada, TD, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC, and National Bank, aims to strengthen the country's payments infrastructure.
The first step in this effort is tokenized deposits, which are digital representations of traditional bank deposits issued on a blockchain or similar technology. This allows for faster and more secure transactions, as money can be transferred and settled almost instantly 24/7.
According to the banks, this collaborative effort reflects a shared view that Canada's payments infrastructure must continue to be competitive and secure in the face of global digital money evolution.
