Canadian Banks Launch Joint Effort for Tokenized CAD Deposits

Canadian banks have launched a joint initiative to develop a tokenized Canadian-dollar deposit system. The project, which includes Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group, aims to keep the country's payments rails competitive as digital money develops worldwide.

The banks are focusing on tokenized deposits: digital records of ordinary commercial-bank deposits that can be transferred on distributed-ledger or similar infrastructure. The funds would remain deposits at the issuing bank rather than becoming a separate crypto-style asset, according to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions.

The collaboration is seen as responsible innovation by the banks, which want faster, more efficient, and programmable payments for Canadian customers while keeping safety, financial stability, and regulatory oversight intact. The project will test the efficient movement of tokenized deposits among participating institutions in its opening phase.
