Canadian Banks Team Up to Develop Secure Tokenized Deposit Solution
Canadian banks are working together to develop a secure tokenized deposit solution for the CAD. Six major banks, including Bank of Montreal (BMO), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), National Bank of Canada (NBC), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), The Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), and TD Bank Group (TD), are exploring this project to drive responsible innovation and facilitate participation in the digital money ecosystem. This initiative aims to deliver faster, more efficient, and programmable payments while preserving safety, stability, and regulatory oversight.
The first phase of the project focuses on moving tokenized deposits efficiently across Canadian financial institutions with a long-term goal to connect with other emerging digital assets initiatives. The banks anticipate the inclusion of other deposit-taking institutions at an appropriate time. This collaborative effort reflects a shared view that Canada's payments infrastructure must continue to be competitive and secure as digital money evolves globally.
The project is exploring tokenized deposit solutions, which involve creating digital tokens representing deposits held in traditional bank accounts. This approach allows for more efficient and programmable transactions, potentially reducing costs and increasing speed. The banks are working together to ensure the security, stability, and effective regulatory oversight of this new financial infrastructure.
