Canadian Banks Unite for Tokenized Deposit Initiative
Canada's six largest banks have announced a joint initiative to explore tokenized deposit systems in Canadian dollars. The project, which aims to drive responsible innovation and facilitate broad participation in the digital money ecosystem for Canadians, will begin with an effort to move tokenized deposits efficiently between financial institutions.
The banks involved, Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group, stopped short of naming a launch date or consumer-facing token, describing the work as an exploration of a shared model for Canadian-dollar digital money.
The system is designed to deliver faster, more efficient, and programmable payments to Canadian customers while preserving safety, stability, and effective regulatory oversight. A longer-term goal is to connect the platform with other emerging digital assets initiatives.
Tokenized deposits are bank deposits recorded on a distributed ledger, allowing balances to move between institutions with the finality and legal certainty of conventional settlement rails. This concept is part of a broader wave of bank-led digital money experiments, including Swift's cross-border tokenized deposit tests.
