Canadian Banks Unite to Develop Domestic Digital Money Solution
Canada's Big Six banks have announced their joint exploration of developing a Canadian dollar-based digital money solution. The participating institutions are Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, The Bank of Nova Scotia, and TD Bank.
The collaboration stems from the shared view that Canada's payments infrastructure must remain competitive and secure in the face of global digital advancements.
The project will begin with a 'tokenized deposits initiative,' which aims to drive responsible innovation and facilitate broad participation in the digital money ecosystem for Canadians. The goal is to deliver faster, more efficient, and programmable payments while maintaining safety, stability, and effective regulatory oversight.
