Canadian Business Investment Held Back by Uncertainty Over US Relationship

Canada's business investment is being held back by persistent uncertainty around its relationship with the United States. A recent survey conducted by Statistics Canada and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce found that ten percent of manufacturing firms plan to delay major investments over the next 12 months due to US tariffs, compared to five percent of all businesses.

The survey, which included over 9,200 responses between April 1 and May 6, suggests that the uncertainty caused by shifting trade policies and tense relations with the US is having a significant impact on business investment. According to Patrick Gill, vice-president of the Business Data Lab at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, every delayed investment decision results in a missed opportunity for factory expansion, technology upgrades, or productivity improvements.

The survey also found that nearly ten percent of businesses across the natural-resource sectors plan to delay major investments, and business sentiment has been deteriorating for eight consecutive quarters. Despite this, very few companies are planning to move their operations to the US, with less than one percent planning to establish US operations and just 0.4 percent planning to acquire or partner with a US business.

The uncertainty caused by the trade war has had far-reaching impacts on exporting industries, leading to dampened business confidence and a mild contraction in the economy over a six-month period. However, the Canadian economy has stabilized in recent months, with GDP expected to grow at an annualized rate of over two percent in the second quarter.

According to the survey, businesses not planning to apply for financing could take on additional debt, suggesting that financing capacity is not the main reason for Canada's weak investment performance. The survey's findings suggest that stronger confidence and improved market opportunities are needed to boost business investment and drive long-term prosperity.
