A Canadian citizen has been sentenced to eight years in prison for carrying more than the allowed limit of US and Canadian dollars at Karachi airport.

Raheel Dhannani, a resident with a Canadian passport, was traveling with his family to Vancouver, Canada, via Bangkok on January 24, 2023. When customs officials asked him if he had any foreign currency, he replied in the negative.

However, upon checking his luggage and bags, $111,400 and Canadian dollars 31,425 were found in his possession. The prosecution claimed that Dhannani's actions constituted an attempt to export smuggled goods contrary to law.

The defense argued that no declaration form was issued to the accused, no CCTV footage was produced, and no independent witness was associated. However, the court rejected these contentions and found Dhannani guilty of committing offenses under the customs act.
