Canadian Inflation Hits BoC Limit Amid Broad Price Pressures

Canadian inflation has reached the Bank of Canada's (BoC) upper limit of 3% as broad price pressures accelerate. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) growth accelerated to 3% in July, up from 2.8% in June, with gasoline being the primary driver of growth.

The rate of gas price increase accelerated from 20.5% in June to 25.7% last month, while excluding gasoline, CPI advanced 2.2% year-over-year for a third straight month. Headline inflation is now sitting at the BoC's 3.0% upper bound, making it more difficult for the central bank to ease policy.

The acceleration in inflation is not limited to energy alone, as five of the eight major CPI components saw growth in July, including transportation (+7.8%), recreation/education/reading (+4.4%), and food (+3.0%). However, housing-related expenses, such as homeowner replacement costs (-2.1%) and owned accommodation expenses (-1.8%), are tempering inflation.
