Canadians Remain Cautious About Economy Despite Growing Trust in Carney
A recent Research Co. poll has found that Canadians remain cautious about their economic outlook, but confidence in Mark Carney's leadership is holding firm.
The survey of 1,002 adults conducted between August 31 and September 2, 2026, found that nearly three in five (59%) Canadians consider the current economic conditions to be 'bad' or 'very bad', down one point from February. However, more than a third (36%) rate the conditions as 'good' or 'very good'. Alberta residents are the least likely to say that Canada's economy is 'good' or 'very good', with only 27% sharing this view.
The survey also found that Canadians continue to worry about financial issues, such as the safety of their savings (45%) and the value of their investments (44%). However, fewer are concerned about being able to pay their mortgage or rent (39%), someone in their household becoming unemployed (38%), or their employer running into serious financial trouble (34%).
The conflict between the United States and Iran has had a profound effect on Canadians' views. For the first time since February 2025, equal proportions of respondents expect to pay more for groceries (75%) and gasoline (75%).
