Canadians Want Pipelines, But Don't Want To Pay For Them
A proposed pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia has garnered support from 63% of Canadians, according to recent polling. The majority cited economic reasons for their backing, with many believing Canada needs to diversify its oil markets away from the US and that oil is essential to the economy.
However, a separate poll found that 61% of Albertans do not want taxpayers to foot the bill for the pipeline's construction. This raises questions about who will ultimately pay for the project.
The proposed pipeline, estimated to cost between CA$35.2 billion and CA$43.7 billion, would be majority-owned by Alberta and the Canadian government through their respective entities, Trans Mountain Corp. and the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission.
