The world of defense economics is undergoing a radical shift, driven by the proliferation of cheap cardboard drones. These 'flat-pack' aircraft, like the Australian Corvo Precision Payload Delivery System and Japan's AirKamuy 150, are forcing militaries to rethink their strategies. Unlike high-tech platforms that require complex development, testing, and maintenance, these drones are designed as consumable items, with costs shifting from expensive systems to reusable components.
The key advantage of cardboard drones lies in their ability to be deployed quickly, decentrally, and in large numbers at reasonable costs. Publicly quoted prices for Corvo PPDS systems range from approximately $1,000 to $5,000 Australian dollars per unit, while the AirKamuy 150 costs around $2,000 to $3,000. These affordable systems can be assembled near the operational area and discarded after use.
The industrialization of airspace consumption is turning global arms strategies upside down. Western militaries have long relied on high-capital-intensive platforms, but cardboard drones are changing this paradigm. The AirKamuy 150, for instance, can accommodate more than 500 units in a standard 20-foot container, reducing transport volume and facilitating decentralized inventory.
Japan's defense perspective is particularly relevant due to its geographical challenges, including long coastlines, island regions, and maritime shipping lanes. Inexpensive, rapidly deployable aircraft could be attractive for reconnaissance, communications relay, deception, target simulation, or small-scale transport missions.
