Carney Backs Port Expansion Plan for Canada's Economic Diversification
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed support for the expansion of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority's Roberts Bank Terminal 2, citing its crucial role in strengthening the country's independence and diversifying its economy. The port's existing capacity is expected to be insufficient to meet Ottawa's growth goals within the next decade.
The proposal involves a new three-berth terminal that would increase container capacity by 50% at the Roberts Bank Terminal, enabling an additional $100 billion in trade capacity annually. Carney emphasized the need for Canada to expand its port capacity and connected infrastructure to boost trade with Asian countries and reduce dependence on exports to the United States.
Ottawa is committing over $10 billion to fund the project, which is expected to create 18,000 jobs during construction and an additional 17,000 full-time positions once operational. The government has also stated its intention to involve local First Nations in sharing the economic benefits of the proposal while ensuring environmental protections.
