Carney Calls for End of US Dollar Dominance
Mark Carney's recent comments on currency have sparked attention, but the most significant point he made may be lost in the noise. In an interview with the New York Times, Carney discussed the global reserve currency and its implications for trade.
According to the Times, Carney believes a move away from the US dollar as the global reserve currency would provide more flexibility in the financial system. He also mentioned that China's currency, the yuan or renminbi, needs to be liberalized for this shift to happen.
This is not the first time Carney has advocated for a multipolar financial system, where several reserve currencies coexist. As governor of the Bank of England, he gave a speech in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, arguing for China's currency to take on a greater role as a reserve currency.
Carney's comments have raised eyebrows in Washington, with some seeing it as a hostile act against the US dollar's global status. However, Carney views this shift as necessary and sustainable.
