Carney Proposes Canada-EU Alliance Amid Rate Hike and Investment Summit
Prime Minister Mark Carney proposed a closer alliance between Canada and the European Union to counterbalance great powers, in a speech to the European Parliament. The move comes as Canada hosts its first-ever investment summit, where top CEOs gathered to discuss opportunities for Canadian businesses.
The summit brought together 250 leading financial executives, senior officials, and Canadian politicians at Toronto's Four Seasons hotel. They represent about $120-trillion in assets between them.
Carney's vision is for a Canada-EU alliance that would build independent data and computing power, payment systems, defense industries, energy supplies, and critical mineral resources. This move has drawn attention from the US Federal Reserve, which raised interest rates this week to combat inflation.
The Federal Open Market Committee unanimously decided to raise its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a range of 3.75 to 4 per cent. The decision was in line with expectations and aimed to support the Fed's 2-per-cent inflation target.
