Carney Pushes for Deeper Canada-EU Ties Amid Trump Tariff Threats
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for deeper ties between Canada and the European Union, citing strengthened economic and strategic resilience as key benefits.
In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Thursday, Carney welcomed the proposal for Canada to become an 'associate member' of the EU, stating that stronger ties would boost both sides' power.
'Europe and Canada are both powerful on their own, but together, they are even stronger,' Carney told EU lawmakers.
US President Donald Trump criticized the proposal, warning that Washington could impose additional tariffs on Europe if he considered the move hostile. However, Carney emphasized that Canada is not seeking to establish a power bloc to rival major powers but wants to strengthen its ability to protect its economy, sovereignty, and democratic institutions.
