Carney Unveils National AI Council for Canadian Tech Sovereignty
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a new National Council on Artificial Intelligence to guide the country's push for tech sovereignty and create 250,000 new jobs. The council will advise the government on adopting AI while protecting Canada's sovereignty over the technology.
The 13-member council includes renowned researchers, entrepreneurs, and investors who will inform and advise the government on deploying AI in Canada. They aim to accelerate AI adoption, build domestic champions, and strengthen sovereign AI infrastructure.
'Prosperity and sovereignty in the age of AI belong to nations that can build, adopt, and govern AI on their own terms,' Carney said.
The council's mandate spans economic competitiveness, government use of AI, talent development, research, and sovereign infrastructure. The government's AI for All strategy aims to add $200 billion to the economy and create 250,000 AI-related jobs over five years.
