Carney's CPP Partnership with Brookfield Sparks Concerns Over Public Fund Misuse
Mark Carney, Canada's Prime Minister and former vice-chair of Brookfield Asset Management, has formed a $50-billion partnership between the company and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). The Maple Fund is designed to mobilize large sums of private capital towards Canadian infrastructure and industry.
The CPP had $863.6 billion in assets as of June 30th, while Brookfield managed over $1 trillion in assets. However, it's the CPP, with its 22-million contributors, that's providing the long-term investment capital for the Maple Fund.
Conservative MP Blaine Calkins has expressed concerns about the partnership, suggesting that Carney is using the CPP to further Brookfield's interests and enrich himself. Calkins points out that global asset management portfolios now have more collective wealth than the economy of Canada's G7 nation.
