Carney's Crusade Against Trump Leaves Canada Exposed
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has become a rallying figure against U.S. President Donald Trump, but Canada's economy may be too exposed to break away. Carney recently spoke at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, calling for an alliance with the EU to serve as 'a beacon for other democracies.'
Carney based his Liberal Party's campaign on fighting back against Trump and has continued this approach by imposing countermeasures to Trump administration tariffs. He has also sought to reduce Canada's dependence on the U.S., deepening ties with the EU and seeking new trade opportunities.
The Canadian economy is heavily reliant on exports to the U.S., with two-thirds of all exports going south of the border. Carney acknowledged this vulnerability, stating that 60% of Canadian-made car parts and 90% of finished vehicles are exported to the U.S.
