Carney's Secret Summit: Billionaires Invited to Buy Canadian Assets
Mark Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England and current UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance, recently hosted a private summit for some of the world's richest CEOs and investors at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto. The meeting was kept under wraps, but it's understood that the agenda included attracting investment to Canada.
The guest list was largely private, but names like Teck Resources CEO Jonathan Price, Bombardier CEO Éric Martel, Suncor Energy CEO Rich Kruger, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, and representatives from Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., Saudi Arabia's Private Investment Fund, and China Investment Corp. have been revealed.
These individuals control nearly $120 trillion in assets and had direct access to Carney and all 13 of Canada's premiers. Cabinet members like Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc also held 'investment sessions'.
The meeting was seen as a chance for the government to facilitate deals with these powerful investors, who were shown over 167 infrastructure projects worth billions of dollars. These included mines, ports, energy, and power projects.
