Carney's Warning Sparks Call for Canada to Diversify Beyond US
Canada's reliance on its relationship with the United States has been put under scrutiny after Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that Canada has considered the remote possibility of American military action.
Geopolitical strategist Abishur Prakash argued that Ottawa cannot treat this possibility seriously while assuming the relationship with Washington can continue unchanged, stating 'We cannot operate in the old status quo anymore.'
Prakash questioned whether closer European ties could provide a dependable military answer to a threat from the United States and noted that even a new defense agreement would leave a fundamental question unanswered: would European countries actually fight American forces to protect Canada?
He argued that Canada should use the time available to strengthen its economy, expand international relationships, and build capacity beyond raw resources. This includes developing businesses and capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence exports and critical minerals processing.
