Cash Rate Hike Leaves Young Father Reeling from Weekend Blowout
Brett Salsbury, a 34-year-old quantity surveyor and young father of two, is still recovering from his weekend grand final blowout. The event was supposed to be a rare chance for him to let loose with friends, but it may have come at the worst possible time.
Brett's wife, Ash, had encouraged him to join his mates for a night out, saying it usually helps clear his mind and recharge him. However, Brett has now realized that letting loose might not have been the best decision, especially with the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) hiking the cash rate to 4.6 percent on Tuesday.
The RBA's 0.25 basis point raise brings the cash rate to its highest level since late 2011, and another hike is forecasted before Christmas as the bank tries to get tough on inflation after cutting rates last year. Brett has had a rude awakening, realizing that his night out may have cost him dearly.
'Do you know how much a schooner costs nowadays? I spent like $700 bucks on the weekend,' Brett said, clearly regretting his decision. He's now forecasting that he'll be sticking to 'Heaps Normal' and avoiding future grand final blowouts.
