Cathie Wood Predicts Stronger Dollar and Key Shifts in Markets
ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood believes the US dollar is stronger than most investors realize and could see significant gains in the coming years. She argues that the commonly watched US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the dollar against six major currencies, is outdated. Instead, she points to the Federal Reserve’s broader index, which covers 26 countries and adjusts weights annually. On this measure, the dollar has surged 36% since August 2008 and now trades 44% above its long-term average.
Wood attributes the dollar’s strength to tax incentives driving US investment in factories and data centers, as well as tight monetary policy under Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh. She draws parallels to the early 1980s, when strong US returns boosted the dollar sharply. In September, the DXY gained nearly 2%, its best month since June, as the Fed raised rates and hinted at further hikes.
Gold presents a challenge to Wood’s argument, as the dollar has lost 92% of its purchasing power against gold since 2002. Wood suggests tighter policy could reverse some of that decline. Gold has already dropped from its January high of $5,602 to around $4,140, with Morgan Stanley’s Amy Gower identifying $4,000 as a key support level due to central-bank buying.
Bitcoin offers another test for Wood’s thesis. Historically, Bitcoin struggles when the dollar strengthens, yet it rose 6.14% in September alongside the DXY. If this divergence continues, Bitcoin may be breaking from past dollar cycles. However, if the trend reverses, Wood’s stronger-dollar outlook could pose challenges for crypto investors.
