Central Banks Flock to London Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions

The Netherlands has moved part of its gold reserves from North America to London in response to rising geopolitical tensions. The country's central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank, confirmed that around 86 tonnes of the nearly 313 tonnes held in the US and Canada have been transferred to the vaults of the Bank of England. This move is seen as a strategic decision to have its gold reserves readily accessible for use in a crisis situation.

The Netherlands is not alone in this effort, with France having announced earlier this year that it would withdraw its gold reserves from the US, and Germany transferring more than 216 tonnes from overseas storage facilities in previous years. Analysts point out that this strategy was also used during the Cold War, but inflation, interest rates, and the need for rapid trading are now also key factors.

The process of moving gold reserves involves various methods, including selling gold in one location and buying it in another with only an accounting transfer taking place. This approach has been adopted by companies such as Brink's Global Services, which reports increased demand from central banks looking to hold more gold domestically. However, this trend comes at a cost, requiring investment in security, auditing, and insurance.
