Central Banks Globally Raise Interest Rates to Combat Rising Inflation

Global inflation is rising again due to recent energy price spikes from the Iran war and supply chain pressures. Central banks worldwide have responded by increasing interest rates, with some analysts predicting that the Federal Reserve may follow suit.

In the US, the annual inflation rate stands at 3.5% for the 12 months ending in June, down from 4.2% in May. However, this still exceeds the Fed's target of 2%. Other Western democracies are facing similar inflation challenges.

Rate increases have already begun globally, with Australia, Norway, Europe, and Japan raising rates over the past few months. Economists and financial markets initially expected lower interest rates in 2026 due to a slower-than-expected labor market. However, with rising energy costs and sticky inflation, central banks are taking action.

Economist Mark Zandi had predicted three rate cuts in 2026 to stimulate the economy, but now believes that higher rates may be necessary to combat inflation. Some analysts argue that increased energy prices are the primary cause of persistent inflation, while others point to the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Federal Reserve and Bank of England have kept rates steady for now due to a weak job market in both countries. However, if inflation remains high, another wave of rate increases could begin this fall.
