Central Banks React to Higher Inflation with Rate Hikes
The past couple of weeks have been busy for central banks, with several major decisions made regarding interest rates and inflation targets.
Last week, the European Central Bank (ECB) raised its policy rate for the second time this year. This decision was seen as a response to higher-than-targeted inflation levels in the Eurozone.
The US Federal Reserve also hiked its policy rate for the first time since 2023, but the decision was not without controversy. Some analysts argued that core inflation, which excludes volatile items like food and energy, has been relatively well-behaved and does not warrant a rate hike at this time.
The Bank of England, on the other hand, chose to leave its policy rates unchanged, citing concerns about the impact of higher oil prices on the economy. However, investors expect the Bank of England to raise rates in the coming months.
